Washer Pedestal Not Level? Here’s How to Fix It Before It Damages Your Machine

In many Australian homes, washer pedestals have become a laundry essential, and it is not hard to see why. By raising the height of your front-load washer or dryer by 30–40cm, a pedestal makes loading and unloading laundry much easier—reducing back strain and freeing up valuable under-appliance storage space.

However, a washer pedestal that’s not level can quickly turn helpful convenience into a headache. An uneven pedestal causes excessive vibration, irritating noise, and in severe cases, can damage your washing machine, its internal components, surrounding cabinetry, or flooring.

In this guide, you will learn how to spot pedestal problems, fix them step-by-step, and prevent long-term damage—ensuring safe, smooth laundry for years to come.

Why washer pedestals need to be level

The most critical reason for levelling your washer pedestal is stability. Most front-load washers spin at speeds up to 1,400rpm, generating significant force. An uneven pedestal means this force is not distributed properly, potentially causing:

• The washing machine to rock or “walk” during spin cycles.

• Unnecessary strain on the drum, bearings, and motor—leading to costly repairs

• Vibration and noise can damage wooden floors, nearby walls, or cause items atop the washer to fall.

• Shortened lifespan for both the washer and pedestal due to wear-and-tear on mounts, legs, and frame.

Choice Australia1 advises that installing your washing machine on a level surface helps improve its stability and reduces noise, potentially lowering the risk of issues.

Common signs your pedestal is not level

How do you know if your washer pedestal needs attention? Watch for these warning signs:

• Washer rocks or moves during the spin cycle: Excessive shifting is a red flag.

• Loud banging, rattling, or shaking noises: Particularly during high-speed spins.

• Visible gaps or unequal spacing underneath: Check both side-to-side and front-to-back.

• Pedestal drawer jams or does not close smoothly: Indicates misalignment.

Step-by-step guide: how to fix an uneven washer pedestal

1. Check the floor surface
Make sure your washer and pedestal are on a hard, flat floor (tiles, vinyl, concrete). Avoid carpet, uneven timber, or soft floorboards, which can compress.

2. Inspect installation accuracy
Confirm the pedestal is securely bolted or clipped to the washer as per manufacturer instructions. Loose fittings are a common cause of instability.

3. Adjust pedestal feet
Each pedestal typically has four adjustable feet. Use a spanner or pliers to slowly tighten or loosen until all feet rest evenly. Do not force—gentle adjustments work best.

4. Use a spirit (bubble) level
Place the level across the front and then side of the washer/pedestal combo. Adjust feet and retest until both directions are perfectly balanced.

5. Test operation
Run a short rinse/spin cycle. Observe vibration, listen for noise, and check if the machine stays in place. Repeat adjustments if necessary.

Extra tips for keeping pedestals level

• Level pedestal BEFORE installing washing machine.

• Never place a pedestal/washer set on carpet or unstable surfaces—this allows flex and movement.

• Regularly check bolts, screws, and clips, especially after moving or when you notice new vibrations.

• For homes with uneven floors, consider anti-vibration pads for added grip and stability. These pads are proven to reduce both noise and machine “walking”.

When to replace a pedestal instead of fixing

Sometimes, adjusting is not enough if the pedestal itself is damaged:

• Bent or rusted frame: Structural problems and recurring instability.

• Drawer rails broken or jammed: Cannot be corrected with levelling.

• Stripped or damaged feet: Adjustment impossible.

• Persistent instability despite adjustment: Ongoing wobble is a sign of deeper damage.

If your pedestal shows any of these issues, it is time for a replacement—using a worn pedestal puts your expensive washer at risk.

Choosing the right pedestal for your washer

Brand compatibility: Always buy pedestals designed for your washer/dryer.

Correct pedestal size: Match pedestal dimensions and mount points to your appliance’s specs.

Storage vs. non-storage: Decide if you want a built-in drawer for laundry essentials, or a simple riser.

Buy genuine or equivalent: Genuine pedestals guarantee fitness and stability; compatible options can save money but check reviews and fit guides.
